What are fractures?

Foot and ankle fractures are common injuries that occur when one or more bones are broken due to trauma or stress. These fractures are often caused by falls, missed steps, car accidents, heavy objects dropping on the foot, or repetitive overuse from activities like running or walking.

The type of fracture that occurs depends on the severity and nature of the injury. Common types include stress fractures, hairline fractures, closed (simple) fractures, open (compound) fractures, crush injuries, and spiral fractures. Each type requires a specific approach to treatment and recovery.

HOW ARE STRESS FRACTURES DIAGNOSED?

At Empire Podiatry, we use advanced digital X-ray technology to quickly and safely diagnose foot and ankle conditions. This allows us to get clear, accurate images so we can provide the best care possible—all in the comfort of our office.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR FOOT AND ANKLE FRACTURES?

At Empire Podiatry in NYC, stress fracture treatment varies based on the specific location and severity of the injury.

Reduction

Oftentimes, fractured bones need to be realigned and manipulated back into their proper positions, which is done through a process called closed reduction. Depending on the amount of pain and swelling surrounding the affected area, a muscle relaxant, or a sedative may be provided to minimize any pain or discomfort during this procedure.

ImmobilizatioN

A broken bone must be immobilized to ensure proper healing. A variety of external devices may be used to hold the bone in proper alignment while healing. Such devices may include taping, strapping, splinting, bracing, or casting devices, surgical shoes, or pneumatic compression walking boots. Crutches may also be provided for added offloading assistance.

Surgery

When fractures cannot be realigned manually, a severely broken foot or ankle may require surgery to secure the bones with wires, plates, rods, or screws to ensure proper healing. If surgery is needed, you can trust that you’re in expert hands. Dr. Stephanie Lubin, a board-certified foot surgeon at Empire Podiatry, is experienced in performing foot and ankle surgeries with skill and provides personalized, attentive follow-up care for every patient.
